What do you think of my writing? How can I improve?

I only read part of it but in "He had long considered buckling the strap, but the strap rubbed uncomfortably" use a synonym for strap because some people are turned off by the repetitive words that are in use, especially in the same sentence. Try to apply it into your writing style too that way the problem won't come up later while you or a friend revises it.
