Can you be promoted more than once a month in the Marine Corps?

I was talking to a private right out of boot camp and he was telling me that it would be impossible for him to become a lance corporal this month because he just graduated as a private. Does this mean that you can only be promoted one paygrade per month or did I hear him wrong? If so, why is this?
