Why should questions about Fmr. Gov. Romney's Mormon faith be off limits?

Until 1978, black me could not be ordained as priests in the LDS church. Mitt Romney was 31 years old in 1978. Is it wrong to ask why he was a member of an officially racist organization as an adult?
